Equality is union business

Posted on August 23, 2017

As union members, we have a vision for a just and fair society. A society where all jobs are decent, safe and well-paying, where communities have access to quality public services and where everyone is equal.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) union members have the same right as every other union member to have their loving, committed relationships treated equally.

Now that the federal government has put this up for debate with a postal survey, we need to be ready to vote yes for marriage equality.

It is crunch time! You will only get a say if the AEC has your correct address in the next 24 hours. Here's what you need to do right now for marriage equality:

  1. Even if you think your enrolment is right, check your enrolment NOW – it will only take a minute!
  2. Ask your colleagues to check their enrolment too.
  3. The postal survey has been designed to alienate young people. Make sure that the young people in your household, family and workplace are enrolled and ready to vote.

If you or someone you love identifies as LGBTIQ, your union and the whole union movement has your back.

P.S. We acknowledge that the coming months might be difficult for LGBTIQ members and their families. Here is a resource with some tips for looking after yourself during the survey.
