North Queensland cyclone watch - be prepared and know your rights.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for another potential cyclone approaching north Queensland which could cross the coast as early as Thursday.

You can view the BOM warnings here.

Your safety is paramount. Please prioritise it above all else. If you are in any doubt about your ability to safely travel to or from work, or if you have concerns about the safety of your workplace, please contact your line manager or your union office ASAP.

It is important that preparations for the cyclone begin now. Part of your preparation is knowing your workplace rights if you're affected by the severe weather.

As always, please ensure you are following all local safety guidelines and the BOM and take this opportunity to remind you of your rights and entitlements during such severe weather events:

  1. Special Leave Entitlements: If you're unable to work due to the cyclone or related conditions like road closures, you may be eligible for special leave. This is applicable for circumstances like being unable to return from leave, needing to leave early for safety, staying at home for family or property protection, or delays in transfers.

  2. Duration of Leave: You are entitled to up to five days of paid leave (noncumulative), based on the number of hours you were scheduled to work but were unable to due to the cyclone.

  3. Alternative Work Locations: If it's feasible and within your scope of practice, you may be asked to work at an alternate site.

You can view more information about your leave entitlements at this time on page 8 of the Directive.

Stay informed and stay safe.

For any specific concerns or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact your union office on 1800 177 244 or email your.union@together.org.au.
